Alberto Bacó Bagué (2016)

Alberto Bacó Bagué is an attorney, CPA, and entrepreneur. He was appointed Interim President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Government Development Bank in September 2016 and became permanent President on November 1, 2016. At the time of his appointment to the GDB and since 2013 he served as Secretary of Economic Development and Commerce, a position he had assumed with a great sense of commitment during one of the most challenging times in the history of Puerto Rico.

Bacó Bagué started working at a very early age at his family’s furniture manufacturing business, where he learned firsthand the importance for companies to be constantly adapting to local and global changes and competitive shifts.

Subsequently, after graduating Magna Cum Laude with a bachelor's degree in Business Administration from the University of Puerto Rico he acquired a CPA license. He also received a Juris Doctor degree. This combination has proven key to handle all business aspects in law firms, international accounting firms, government agencies and Boards of Directors.

A firm believer that no company should disappear, just transform, he has had a successful career designing and executing strategies to accomplish company turnarounds. In leadership positions he has achieved important changes in vision, administration, execution and performance measuring, both in public and private organizations. Experiences during his career have led him to develop a competitive edge in situations where he is quick to define a project’s path to success by creating unique solutions.

Specifically, in the government sector, he served as President of the Economic Development Bank, and in the private sector, he served as CEO of Marvel and Bohío International. In addition, he has held Board seats in W Holdings and Assurant P.R, among others, which has diversified his experience allowing him to measure risk, act as mediator as well as to provide vision and guidance for execution and negotiation.

He has been an active member of the YPO international organization, a forum that has granted him the opportunity to develop strong leadership skills.  At a local level, Bacó has held all head positions within this organization, including Chapter Chairman. In addition, he formed part of the YPO Latam forum and was responsible for founding the Latin American Business Council - Puerto Rico Chapter. He has represented these organizations in international forums.

During his career, Bacó Bagué has distinguished himself as an active supporter of the development of the venture capital and private equity industry in Puerto Rico, an endeavor he will pursue for the rest of his career life.

Under his guidance, both at the Department of Economic Development and Commerce and at the GDB, significant efforts were made to embark Puerto Rico’s economy on a journey to a second grand economic transformation, a new knowledge- and service-based economy that would strengthen all industries and sectors.
